Designing a Unified, Digital-First Healthcare Ecosystem

Today, Blue KC serves nearly one million members across the Kansas City metropolitan area, including parts of Missouri and Kansas. It continues to innovate in areas like digital healthcare delivery, population health, and expanded care offerings while maintaining its mission to make healthcare more affordable, accessible, and member-focused.

Blue KC’s digital presence had evolved across years of growth, resulting in multiple web properties, sub-brands, and nonprofit initiatives that felt disconnected and inconsistent. The opportunity was to move beyond a traditional insurance website and create a digital-first brand experience—one that could serve members, attract new customers, and support community health initiatives from a single platform.

As Creative Director and Designer, I led the rebrand and redesign of BlueKC.com, driving the digital brand expression, ecosystem design, and UI, while collaborating closely with the UX team to optimize the experience across audiences.

The Challenge

Blue KC needed a modern digital foundation that could:

  • Unify all web properties, platforms and organizational divisions under a consistent, scalable design system
  • Support diverse audiences including current members, prospective members, employers, and the community
  • Integrate sub-brands such as Spira Care and nonprofit initiatives like Shut Out the Stigma without diluting the core brand
  • Balance healthcare complexity with clarity, trust, and accessibility
  • Evolve BlueKC.com into more than a brochure—making it a functional portal and content hub

Healthcare decisions are high-stakes. The experience needed to be clear, human, and easy to navigate.

The redesign focused on building a unified digital ecosystem—anchored by a digital-first brand and supported by a flexible design system. I led the evolution of Blue KC’s digital brand expression, modernizing how the organization shows up online while preserving trust and credibility.

  • A refreshed visual language optimized for digital use
  • Clear hierarchy, approachable typography, and accessible color systems
  • A UI style that balanced warmth, clarity, and professionalism

The result was a brand that felt contemporary, human-centric, and purpose-driven.

 

Ecosystem & Design System

At the core of the work was a scalable design system that unified all Blue KC digital properties.

This included:

  • Created consistency across BlueKC.com, sub-brands, and initiatives
  • Allowed flexibility for distinct programs like Spira Care
  • Supported nonprofit storytelling without fragmenting the ecosystem
  • Enabled faster, more consistent future development

This system became the connective tissue across the entire digital experience.

The Outcome

The redesigned BlueKC.com launched as a unified, digital-first platform that brought clarity to a complex healthcare ecosystem.
